In the world of rhythm and blues, few names command the respect and admiration of Smokey Robinson. He's not just a singer or a songwriter; he is, as he's been called, the "poet laureate of soul." The Rady Shell stop on his ongoing Smokey Legacy Tour proved that at 85, this living legend's ability to captivate an audience is as potent as ever. The show was a masterclass in musical history, seamlessly blending his storied past with his vibrant present. Stepping onto the stage with an effortless grace, Robinson immediately commanded attention. His voice, that smooth, unmistakable tenor, remains remarkably intact. From the moment he opened with a classic like "Being With You," it was clear that his falsetto and impeccable timing have not diminished. His stage presence is both polished and personal; he dances, winks at the audience, and moves with an infectious energy that belies his over 60 year, decades-long career. The setlist was a journey through a six-decade discography that has shaped the very foundation of popular music. The crowd was treated to a powerful medley of hits from his time with The Miracles, including "The Tracks of My Tears" and "I Second That Emotion." But a particularly powerful moment came when he paid tribute to his songwriting legacy for others, leading the crowd through a medley of songs he wrote for The Temptations, such as "My Girl" and "Get Ready." It was a beautiful reminder of his immense influence on the entire Motown sound. What truly makes a Smokey Robinson show special is his ability to connect with the audience. Between songs, he's a natural storyteller, sharing witty anecdotes from his early days at Motown. He shared the origin story of a song like "The Tears of a Clown," and recounted how he gave "My Girl" to The Temptations. These personal moments transform the concert from a performance into an intimate conversation. Robinson also isn't afraid to embrace the new. He introduced material from his latest album, Gasms, which showcases his enduring creativity. While his classics brought out a wave of nostalgia, his new songs proved that his sound continues to evolve, fitting comfortably alongside his timeless hits. A Smokey Robinson concert is more than just a night of music—it's an experience. It's a celebration of a man who has written more than 4,000 songs and inspired generations of artists. His performance proves that true greatness isn't measured in years, but in the timeless power of song. He is a living, breathing testament to the enduring magic of soul music. Thank you San Diego Symphony, Rady Shell staff and VetTix.org for the wonderful night of music.

Thank you San Diego Symphony, Vet Tix and Rady Shell. Unbelievable! How can someone 85 years old still be that good! One of our best concerts ever. He has not missed a beat. His voice is still amazing and his energy is over the top! His performance last night define the word classic. He sang and danced for two solid hours. He still has it and we loved it. In addition, our seats were great. Haven’t been to The Rady Shell for along time and it is a great venue. Easy entrance and out of there in less than 10 minutes. Very well organized. Thank you for an evening that will stay in our memory! Thank you.
