As David Leopold said himself, I don’t think there’s many people in the world who isn’t familiar with Al Hirschfeld’s work in one way or another. Though they might not know his name per se. For the longest time I was one of such people. Only recently I learned how to correctly pronounce his name. I was always attracted to the balance between the minimalism of the lines and their understated power to convey the characters so strikingly and memorably. And to meet and listen to intimate anecdotes from the mouth of someone who knew him so closely and for so long was a real treat. Thank you to City Winery and the VETTIX foundation for making such events accessible to veterans, for giving back. It does make a difference.
