Since I was much younger, The Old Man and the Sea has always been one of my favorite books. I have read it more times than I can count. On top of that, my wife and I both love opera, so I was doubly excited to get tickets to see this production. Thank you to ASU Gammage for offering these tickets through Vet Tix. The show was amazing! While true to the story, it still brought in social elements in a subtle way and used more modern techniques that I have never seen in an opera before. Was it traditional opera, no. But it was a very well done hybrid production. The cast was very talented. We were also pleasantly surprised to find out that it was the world premier of the show, and we had the opportunity to sit next to the composer, producer and librettist. It was nice to see and feel their own excitement for the show.

Thank you, ASU Gamage. This was a very complex operatic performance. The symbolism depicted throughout in this multi-media production was slightly challenging as could be expected in such an effort. I laud all the performers because it is very difficult to sing in an atonal manner. This was an amazing production. It is almost unnatural singing in a non-harmonic manner. Kudos to all involved for staging such an unusual piece. Everyone involved deserved the standing ovation we gave them. Thank you for this highly creative and inventive work!

A BIG Thank you to ASU Gammage for donating tickets to Veteran Tickeet Foundations so Veterans could attend this performance. The music and voices were super. The topic was very thought-provoking and interesting. It was different than we expected, but we enjoyed it.
